MAGA enthusiasts hailed news from Elon Musk that the Department of Government Efficiency had terminated the lease at the Barack Obama Presidential Library site.
But it appears to be nothing more than a stunt.
Federal officials announced last year that they planned to exit the lease and move Obama’s library to a permanent site, according to news reports.
“JUST IN: Elon Musk and DOGE have TERMINATED the lease on the Obama Presidential Library site in Chicago, per FoxBarry’s gonna be BIG mad,” conservative pundit Nick Sortor posted to X.
A community note that linked to a Fox News article promptly corrected Sortor.
“Missing important context. Although the Obama Presidential Library lease has been terminated, it is unlikely to impact operations as it was previously planned to shutter later this year and move to a new location in 2026,” the note reads.
